What I Wish I Knew About Affiliate Marketing When I Started (19 Years Ago)
Affiliate disclosure: This article contains affiliate links. If you purchase through them I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools and resources I personally use and believe in.
Year one of affiliate marketing I made £47.
Not £47 a day. Not £47 a week. £47 for the entire year.
Year three I hit my first £1,000 month.
In between those two points I made almost every mistake it is possible to make in this space. I promoted the wrong products, built sites on the wrong keywords, ignored email marketing, published content with no strategy behind it, and spent more time reading about affiliate marketing than actually doing it.
None of that is unique. Most affiliates go through some version of the same journey. The difference is how long it takes you to work through it — and how much of it you could have avoided if someone had been straight with you at the start.
This article is that straight conversation. Nineteen years of lessons, mistakes, and hard-won clarity — written down honestly so you can shortcut the part I spent years stumbling through.
I Wish I Had Understood the Difference Between Tactics and a System
This is the big one. The lesson that would have changed everything if I had understood it at the start.
When I began affiliate marketing I consumed everything I could find about how to do it. Write articles. Find keywords. Add affiliate links. Build an email list. Use social media. The advice was everywhere and most of it was technically correct.
What nobody explained was that tactics without a system do not compound. They pile up.
I had articles and affiliate links and an email list that I barely used and a social media presence I posted to occasionally. All the right pieces — completely disconnected from each other. Each one doing its own thing in isolation rather than working together towards a single result.
A system changes that. A system means your content targets the keywords your audience is searching for. Your articles link to each other in a structure that builds authority. Your email list captures the readers you have earned and keeps them connected to your content. Your affiliate recommendations sit naturally within content that has already established trust. Every piece feeds into every other piece.
The difference in results between having all the tactics and having a system that connects them is not marginal. It is the difference between inconsistent occasional commissions and income that grows predictably month on month.
I built that system eventually. It just took far longer than it should have because nobody laid it out for me clearly at the start.
I Wish I Had Chosen My Niche Based on Buyer Intent Not Just Passion
One of the most repeated pieces of advice in affiliate marketing is to choose a niche you are passionate about. The logic is that passion keeps you motivated through the slow early months when results are minimal.
There is some truth in that. But passion alone is not enough — and following it without checking whether your niche has genuine buyer intent and strong affiliate products is one of the most common reasons affiliates stall.
I spent time in niches I was interested in where the commercial opportunity was thin. Low commission rates. Products that did not convert. Audiences who were enthusiastic readers but reluctant buyers. All that effort building content and traffic into an audience that was never really going to generate meaningful affiliate income.
The question you need to answer before you commit to a niche is not just do I know about this or am I interested in this. It is are people actively searching for solutions to problems in this space and are there affiliate products that genuinely solve those problems at a commission rate worth working for.
Passion and commercial viability are not mutually exclusive. But you need both. Passion without viability is a hobby. Viability without interest is a grind. The sweet spot is a niche you find genuinely engaging where real buyer demand exists and quality affiliate products are available.
I Wish I Had Started My Email List on Day One
This one still stings slightly when I think about it.
I built traffic for years before I took email seriously. Organic search traffic, some social, the occasional viral piece of content. Thousands of visitors a month landing on my pages, reading my articles, clicking my links — and then disappearing forever because I had no mechanism to stay in contact with them.
Every visitor you do not capture to an email list is a relationship you will never build. They came, they read, they left. Google can update its algorithm tomorrow and your traffic drops overnight. Social platforms change their reach. But an email list is yours. Nobody can take it from you and no algorithm change affects it.
I know affiliates who built modest but highly engaged email lists in their first year and were earning more consistently from those lists two years in than I was from sites with ten times the traffic. The list is the asset. The traffic is just the mechanism for building it.
If you are starting today — or if you have been at this for a while and still have not prioritised email — start now. Kit has a free plan that covers everything you need until you reach 10,000 subscribers. There is no cost barrier. There is no excuse.

I Wish I Had Written for Buyers Not Browsers
For the first couple of years I wrote content that attracted a lot of readers and converted almost none of them.
The content was fine. Informative, reasonably well written, covering topics people were interested in. But interested readers and buyers are not the same person. And I was writing almost exclusively for the interested reader.
The shift that changed my conversion rate was understanding search intent — specifically the difference between informational intent and commercial intent.
Someone searching for what is affiliate marketing is looking for information. They are at the very beginning of their journey, they have no immediate intention to buy anything, and converting them through an affiliate link on that visit is close to impossible.
Someone searching for best email marketing tool for affiliate marketers is comparing options. They know what they want. They are looking for a recommendation they can trust. They are ready to act.
Both types of content have a place in an affiliate site. But the second type — commercial intent, buyer-focused, specific and comparison-driven — is where affiliate commissions actually come from. I spent too long writing the first type and not enough time writing the second.
Long-tail keywords with buyer intent are the engine of a profitable affiliate site. Learn to identify them early and build your content calendar around them rather than around topics that interest you but attract browsers rather than buyers.
I Wish I Had Been More Patient With the Long Game
Affiliate marketing is a long game dressed up as a short one by everyone trying to sell you a course or a system or a secret method.
The honest timeline for building a reliable affiliate income from scratch — working consistently, publishing regularly, following a proper strategy — is twelve to twenty four months before you are seeing income that meaningfully changes your financial picture.
Most people quit at month three or four. They have published some content, they have some traffic, they have made a handful of sales — and because it does not look like the results they were promised, they conclude that it does not work and they stop.
It does work. But it compounds. And compounding takes time to become visible.
The content you publish in month one starts ranking in month four. The email list you build in month two starts converting in month six. The authority you establish in your niche in the first year starts attracting backlinks and referral traffic in year two. None of it happens on the timeline that the hype merchants promise — but all of it happens if you keep going.
The affiliates who build something real are not the most talented. They are not the ones with the biggest budgets or the best technical skills. They are the ones who understood early that this was a long game and committed to playing it properly.
I wish someone had told me that clearly at the start. It would have saved me a lot of anxiety in year one when £47 felt like evidence that the whole thing was pointless.
It was not pointless. It was just early.
I Wish I Had Invested in the Right Tools Earlier
I spent a long time trying to do affiliate marketing on the cheapest possible setup. Free keyword tools that gave me inaccurate data. Slow hosting that hurt my rankings. No link management system which meant hundreds of raw affiliate links scattered across articles that were impossible to update when programmes changed their URLs.
The tools you use affect the quality of the decisions you make. Bad keyword data means you target keywords you cannot rank for or that do not convert. Slow hosting means higher bounce rates and lower rankings. Unmanaged affiliate links mean lost commissions every time a URL changes.
The investment in proper tools is not large. Hostinger for hosting is a few pounds a month. Kit for email is free until you have ten thousand subscribers. Mangools for keyword research is affordable and accurate. Pretty Links for link management is a one-off purchase that pays for itself the first time you need to update a link across a hundred articles in thirty seconds rather than thirty hours.
These are not luxuries. They are the infrastructure of a properly run affiliate business. Get the infrastructure right early and everything built on top of it performs better.
I Wish I Had Found a Community Earlier
Affiliate marketing is a solitary pursuit by default. You are usually working alone, publishing into what feels like a void in the early months, with no real way of knowing whether what you are doing is right or whether you are making mistakes that someone else could spot in thirty seconds.
A community changes that entirely.
Not a Facebook group full of people posting their Clickbank screenshots and asking for likes. A real community of people at various stages of the same journey, willing to share what is working, ask honest questions, and give genuine feedback on each other’s work.
I found that community later than I should have and the difference it made to my progress was significant. Not because anyone handed me a shortcut but because having people around you who understand what you are building — and who are building the same thing — keeps you going through the slow periods that would otherwise make you quit.
If you are building alone right now, stop. Find your people. The progress you make with the right community around you in year one is meaningfully faster than the progress you make in isolation.
I have a Facebook Community of over 10,000 Followers come and say Hello: Facebook
The Honest Summary
Nineteen years in, here is what I know for certain.
Affiliate marketing works. It builds real income for real people who approach it with the right strategy and the patience to let it compound. The timeline is longer than most people expect and shorter than most people fear after a few months of slow results.
The mistakes I made — wrong niche, no email list, tactics without a system, writing for browsers instead of buyers, expecting fast results — are all avoidable if someone lays them out for you clearly before you make them.
That is what the checklist and the course are for.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it realistically take to make money from affiliate marketing?
Most affiliates who follow a proper strategy and publish consistently start seeing their first commissions within the first two to three months. Building a reliable income that meaningfully changes your financial picture typically takes twelve to twenty four months. The timeline varies depending on niche, content quality, and how consistently you implement the strategy — but anyone promising results in days or weeks is not being straight with you.
What is the biggest mistake beginner affiliates make?
The most common and costly mistake is treating affiliate marketing as a collection of disconnected tactics rather than building a system that connects everything together. Content, traffic, email, and product recommendations all need to work as one joined-up strategy. Without that connection the results stay inconsistent regardless of how much effort you put in.
Do I need a big budget to start affiliate marketing?
No. The core tools you need — hosting, an email platform, a basic keyword tool, and a link management plugin — cost less than £20 a month combined at the beginner level. Kit is free until ten thousand subscribers. Hostinger is a few pounds a month. The budget barrier to starting properly is genuinely low.
Is affiliate marketing still worth starting in 2026?
Yes. The market is more competitive than it was when I started but the opportunity is also significantly larger. More people than ever are buying online and affiliates who build genuine authority in a specific niche, follow a proper content and SEO strategy, and build an email list alongside their content are still building substantial incomes. The window is not closed — it just requires a more strategic approach than it did ten years ago.
